Our patron Gary Crosby is the first-ever jazz musician and individual of colour to receive the prestigious Queens Medal for Music which has until now only been awarded to classical composers and musicians. It is a personal honour bestowed at a private ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
Norma was our inaugural Music Director and created an extensive repertoire for the group over the eight years of her tenure. Before joining BRO Norma completed postgraduate studies in Jazz and contemporary music composition at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Subsequently she has composed, arranged and directed works for large and small, amateur and professional ensembles, with commissions from organisations including Serious and the London Jazz Festival. Norma is also an award winning researcher, recognised by the Southbank Centre as one of its UK change makers, and she has twice received the Royal Society of Public Health Award for her work on music and well-being. She remains involved as a Trustee.
